PULSE Supervision

Hello, and welcome to our wonderings about PULSE supervision.

This letter is for those curious about supervision in professional practice. We wonder where your curiosity might lie.

Perhaps you work in one of the many helping professions and currently receive supervision. Maybe you’re beginning to think about becoming a supervisor yourself, supporting others in reflective practice. Or perhaps you already supervise, and - like Alice in Alice in Wonderland -you’re finding yourself “curiouser and curiouser” about how to grow in your own supervision practice.

Or your reasons might be different altogether - we’re curious about those too.

No matter your starting point, PULSE supervision is for anyone curious about supervision in professional practice. Whether you’re a beginner, experienced, or somewhere in between, we’re delighted to invite you to explore what a different approach to supervision might look like for you.

We are influenced by social constructionist, systemic, and collaborative ideas. We could dive into the theory behind these ideas, but here’s what matters most: we offer a different way of practising, one that honours your knowledge, experience, and who you are - all guided by curiosity, collaboration, and conversation.

In this approach, supervision is a relational space for reflection, where supervisor and supervisee work together to make sense of practice. The supervisor is not an expert giving answers, but a curious companion, exploring assumptions, language, and context alongside you.

Is your interest piqued? Are you wondering, “How do I actually work in this way? What will I learn if I come along?”

This is where our discomfort with words like “training” or “course” comes in. What we’re offering is not a set of instructions, but an opportunity for discovery - a chance to explore your professional knowledges, reflect on what matters most in your work, and connect with what you already know- perhaps even re-energising your practice.

We bring expertise in the supervision process, shaped by our PULSE Supervision model, which we describe in more detail separately, and we’re excited to share ideas and approaches that may help shape or reshape your practice. But we also expect much of the learning will come not from us, but from each other. This is an invitation to engage with multiple perspectives and share the excitement of learning alongside others.

What might you take away from this supervision discovery experience?

You will leave with a clearer sense of the values that guide your work and how those values shape your supervision practice. We hope you’ll also feel reconnected to why you came into this work, with renewed energy and purpose.

By the end of the PULSE supervision experience, you will be able to articulate your own supervision practice. If you are new to supervision, this will give you a strong foundation from which to develop your work with confidence as your practice continues to evolve. If you are already practising as a supervisor, this experience is designed to help you consolidate how you want to work - clarifying what you will carry forward, what you may choose to let go of, and what you want to develop further.

Along the way, you will experiment with different ways of working drawn from narrative, solution-focused, and relational practices. You will also engage with the practical elements of supervision, including session structures, ethical considerations, and processes that help you feel confident running supervision sessions. Most importantly, we hope you’ll leave with greater confidence in your unique way of practising supervision and a clearer sense of direction for your work.

Warmly

Anna Boyce and Belinda Kippen
